Swollen lymph nodes can occur because of an infection, or they can be a sign of a more serious illness. If you feel an enlarged lymph node or you’re unsure, let your doctor know right away. Then check the vertical chain of lymph nodes along the inner upper thigh on both legs. To check the lymph nodes in your groin, use your fingers to feel the horizontal chain of lymph nodes along the groin crease on each side. If you feel a distinct lump in this area, it may be a swollen lymph node. Press your fingers into the crease with moderate pressure and you should feel the muscle, bone, and fat beneath. Move your first 3 fingers to the crease where your thigh meets your pelvis. There are between 100-150 nodes located in this area. Feel for the inguinal lymph nodes in your groin. The membrane provides lubrication so that the organs can move within the abdominal cavity. There are approximately 10 superficial lymph nodes. The superficial inguinal nodes lie along the saphenous vein, superficial to the cribriform fascia that overlies the femoral vessels. Two groups of inguinal lymph nodes are described: The superficial and deep groups. Check the front and back borders of your armpit as well the inner border of your arm. The mesenteric lymph nodes location is in the walls of the intestines and stomach, in between the (the membrane that attaches the intestine to the abdominal wall) layers. Generally the lymph nodes are located along, and named after, the iliac vessels. Use the fingers on your opposite hand to feel the center of your armpit. Any infection can trigger it, including a cold or the flu, an ear infection, STDs (usually inguinal), shingles, tuberculosis, or an abscessed tooth. To check the lymph nodes in your arms and armpits, remove your shirt and lift up one arm. Many things can make your lymph nodes swell. Bring your elbows forward and hunch your shoulders when checking the lymph nodes above your collar bone. Tilt your head toward the side of your neck you’re checking to make it easier to feel for lymph nodes. To check the lymph nodes in your head and neck, move your fingertips in a circular motion in front of and behind your ears, around your jaw, down the sides of your neck, and above your collar bone. In addition to lymph nodes, lymphatic fluid, and lymphatic vessels, the system is comprised of the thymus gland, tonsils. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and organs that isolate and neutralize foreign agents and particles that can do the body harm. An enlarged lymph node may feel like a pea or a grape, and it may feel tender. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped organs that are part of the lymphatic system. Lymph nodes are located in your head, neck, arms, armpits, and groin. Checking your lymph nodes once a month can help you detect any swelling that could indicate a medical issue.
